First of all, what is labneh? Labneh is strained yogurt which has a consistency of Greek yogurt or thicker. Labneh is a very popular condiment (or food) in the Middle East and South Asia. This yogurt-cheese is a part of meze table, assorted small snacks and appetizers.
For sure, labneh is a part of Mediterranean diet, which means that the product is very healthy and good for you.
Labneh could be served as is, or with a few drops of good olive oil, nuts, spices, or herbs. In the future I will share some recipes of delicious and healthy labneh appetizers. Labneh could be an excellent diet alternative to fattier cream cheese.
In my family we have a tradition to watch Oscar ceremony with chicken wings-pork ribs-and-dip with vegetables-dinner. Labneh dip is a perfect complement to spicy chicken wings or ribs. The dip softens a hit of chicken wing’s marinade and creates a wonderful tasty combination of spices and herbs.
Labneh. Labneh Dip
1 – 1 ¼ cups
- 1 – ½ cup good quality plain yogurt
- 1 clove garlic, pressed
- 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley
- 2 tbsp finely chopped scallions or chives
- Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1-2 slices of lemon (or more to taste)
- 1 – 2 tsp very good quality extra virgin olive oil
Line a strainer with cheesecloth. You can use a permanent coffee filter for this as well.
Set the strainer over a bowl or measuring cup.
Pour the yogurt into the lined strainer.
Let stay in a refrigerator for few hours or overnight. Straining time depends on a quality of the yogurt and what you are going to prepare with your labneh (for example, you need thicker labneh for some appetizers vs. some dips).
Add salt, garlic, parsley, scallions, 1 tsp olive oil, squeeze one or two lemon wedges. Stir.
Pour the labneh into a bowl. Drizzle with some best quality olive oil.
Serve with vegetables, crackers, or flat bread.
Cook with pleasure and enjoy the world!
