Orange Yogurt Coffee Cake


I like to bake quick breads and coffee cakes. Usually they are easy to prepare and quite versatile. You can serve them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, on weekdays, holidays, or potlucks. These sweet goodies can make a great holiday gift.

Orange yogurt coffee cake is very fragrant and frankly tasty. Served with cup of coffee or tea it is such a mouthwatering treat. Or, when wrapped in a nice paper, the cake can be a nice sweet ‘from my heart’ surprise for your friends, relatives, or colleagues. So delicious!

Orange Yogurt Coffee Cake


one cake


  • 1 stick butter (3 ½ -4 oz, 100-114 g) at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (or sour cream)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1  tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Powdered sugar for sprinkling (optional)

For the orange syrup:




Preheat an oven to 350 F (180 C).

Butter the bottom and the sides of a baking pan.

Using a food processor, a mixer, or by hand in a bowl, mix the butter and sugar. Stir in the eggs, orange zest, and vanilla extract.

Stir in the yogurt.

Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the butter-egg mixture.

Spoon the dough into the baking pan.

Bake in the oven for 35-45 minutes. Check with a wooden skewer or toothpick. The cake is ready if the skewer comes out clean from the center of the cake.

Take it from the oven. Pour the orange syrup over the cake, spoon by spoon, so the cake soaks the syrup. Slightly cool the cake, then gently remove it from the baking form (the cake is very delicate and can be broken) and cool completely on a rack.


For the syrup:

Stir the simple syrup and the liqueur (or orange zest) together.
